There’s a moment when a place stops being a picture you’ve carried in your mind and becomes real. You’re standing there. Hearing it, tasting it, meeting the people who call it home.
People sometimes ask if I get bored returning to the same places. Quite the opposite. The more I learn, the more there is to share: a detail you might have walked past, a story that changes what you’re looking at, a conversation that brings it all a little closer.
And then there are the people beside you. Strangers at the start, swapping stories over dinner a few days later. A local who takes the time to talk. Someone from another part of the world who suddenly feels familiar.
That’s what stays with me. We travel to see a place, and come home seeing a little differently — the world, each other, sometimes ourselves.

I’ve been leading tours across Europe since 2001, and joined Trafalgar in 2007. Italy is where I spend most of my time on the road, alongside Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Central Europe. Earlier journeys took me from Scandinavia to Russia. Every return adds something to the next journey.
